Over the past several decades, collectors Marlies and Jo Eyck have turned their castle Wijlre, which they bought in Limburg in 1981, into a Gesamtkunstwerk. Here you’ll encounter contemporary art in harmony with architecture, cultural heritage, and nature.

Owners of a paint wholesale company, they began collecting abstract painting in the late 1960s. Over time they added other kinds of art. Today, their collection includes artists ranging from Donald Judd to René Daniëls, to Marlene Dumas. Sculptural works, mainly site-specific, can be found in the palace gardens, such as a fallen tree by Giuseppe Penone.

Also located here is Hedge House, an exhibition pavilion and orchid greenhouse opened in 2001, designed by Wiel Arets Architects (WAA) out of concrete, glass, and steel. Since 2017, the Kasteel Wijlre Estate Foundation oversees the grounds as well as the arts and cultural program.
