An art stroll trough Bavaria's Capitol
Munich has a rich history of being a cultural hotspot. Around 1900 the Bavarian capital reached its peak as a world-renowned center for the arts. Even today you can witness the influences of that time and see them blend with contemporary concepts, players, and spaces of the art world. With its Kunstareal, Munich designated a whole district to experience the interplay of institutions within art, history, and science – right in the heart of the city center. The Pinakothek der Moderne is one of the highlights here and emphasizes the interdisciplinary approach of the Kunstareal within itself. It holds four museums under one roof: the collections focusing on art, graphics, architecture, and product design form one of the largest collection houses in Europe. Another must-see within the Kunstareal is Museum Brandhorst. It opened its doors in 2009 and showcases an incredible collection of contemporary art (1960 – today) put together by collector couple Anette and Udo Brandhorst. You can explore works by Andy Warhol, Sigmar Polke, Gerhard Richter or Jeff Koons here. The museum is also part of the initiative Various Others, where Munich’s art scene brings together local and international players to annually kick-off “art season” each fall. Blending art and science is the fundamental approach of Alexander Tutsek Stiftung. The collection focuses on contemporary photography as well as contemporary sculptures and installations using the medium of glass. And for over 40 years, Galerie Stefan Vogdt has stood for a successful synthesis of fine art and design. Since 2013, the founder’s daughter Felicitas Boos, sets fresh accents and expands the gallery program with contemporary, young positions. So next time you’re in Munich make sure to enter the city’s interdisciplinary ecosystem of the arts – from traditional to contemporary and locally to even internationally established.
