Colección Contemporánea is the newest addition to the growing private museum scene in Mexico City. The collector and entrepreneur Gina Diez-Barroso de Franklin opened her space to the public in late 2015, with a dual focus on art and design. Half of the museum houses Diez-Barroso's private collection, featuring artists including Robert Indiana, Lu Shengzhong, Liu Bolin, Marcus Lyon, and Iván Navarro; the other half hosts temporary exhibitions. The program features collaborations with, among others, Bard College, New York, as well as private galleries. Coming from a family of art collectors—Diego Rivera painted one of his Calla Lilies works for her mother—she has a long association with the Mexican art scene. In 2004, Diez-Barroso founded Centro, the first university in Mexico for art media and design, and the museum reflects this interdisciplinary approach.
