Given that the G2 art space is located in the up-and-coming East German town of Leipzig, it is fitting that the inaugural exhibition, opened in March 2015, focused on works by artists of the ‘New Leipzig School’. Most of these, including Neo Rauch, Matthias Weischer and Tilo Baumgärtel, have studied at the renowned local art school ‘Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst,’ and their figurative paintings have since gained an international profile. Collector Steffen Hildebrand, a property investor based in the city, was an early supporter, and now the art works he has brought together will be displayed in a generous space in the center of Leipzig. Over the next few years, changing exhibitions - complemented by international loans - will showcase other parts of his continuously growing collection, which also includes other German and international artists working in a range of mediums. G2 is also planning projects with up-and-coming artists.
