Fluentum is a nonprofit, privately run institution dedicated to exhibiting, producing, and collecting contemporary art, with a special focus on time-based media such as film and video. An initiative of Berlin-based entrepreneur and collector Markus Hannebauer, Fluentum opened its exhibition space in a former military complex in Berlin in 2019. Fluentum’s aim is to elucidate the moving image’s aesthetic, political, and historical dimensions for a public audience.

At the center of Fluentum’s biannual group and solo exhibitions is the realization of new works, which artists develop by Fluentum’s invitation—such as in THEATER, a solo exhibition by Calla Henkel and Max Pitegoff, currently on view at the space. THEATER marks the beginning of the artist duo's newest durational film, with the first three episodes commissioned by Fluentum. Supporting independent artistic practices, particularly through funding for artistic productions and external exhibitions, is one of the institution’s core priorities. The Fluentum collection includes works by over sixty artists, showcasing a wide range of methods, strategies, and manifestations related to the moving image—from documentary approaches to realist works, associative experimental films, conceptual videos, and feature-length films. A common theme across many of the collection’s pieces is an exploration of historical material within contemporary social contexts, as well as how media transforms storytelling.
